If you could only have one breed of chicken, the Bielefelder might be your top choice! They are docile and gentle, beautifully patterned, excellent egg producers, and a great dual-purpose breed. Bielefelders have clean, yellow legs and a beautiful variegated feather pattern known as cuckoo red. They are believed to be developed from many breeds including Cuckoo Malines or Cuckoo Marans, Amrocks (a European production version of Barred Plymouth Rocks), Wyandottes, New Hampshire Reds, and Rhode Island Reds. Hens are excellent egg layers and should provide you with 3-5 large, brown eggs weekly. Eggs are light brown, often with pink undertones. The Bielefelder is a good forager and hardy in both cold and hot climates.
